Growth principle #2 is to scale personally and professionally.
Concept:
Growth is a function of scale. An obvious but often ignored principle.
How many people use your product or service? One hundred? One million? One billion?
Money flows according to this principle. A teacher may serve 30 students at a time, but more money flows to the school’s principal because they serve the entire student body. Social media influencers like Li Jiaqi the “Lipstick King” who sold 15,000 lipsticks in five minutes and generated $1.7 billion of sales in 12 hours during a 2021 Alibaba Taobao event, are monetizing their influence because they have millions of followers and touch more people than department store clerks.
Scaling professionally means increasing the reach of your products and services. Scaling personally means elevating your speech. I find conversations can be categorized as discussions about people, events, or ideas. Talking about people can be positive if focused on mirroring habits, practices, and values. But many “people” discussions focus on judgement and gossip. Talking about events can be positive if focused on trends and insights. But many “events” discussions focus on things that you can’t influence or are not directly relevant to your life (think doom scrolling). Finally, talking about ideas can be positive if focused on ways to adapt and adopt the success practices of others. But many “ideas” discussions focus on criticizing or badmouthing ideas we oppose.
Reflection:
- What is the scale and reach of your present business? Why?
- How can you elevate your conversations?
Action Step:
Play with ways to attract more positive and diverse energy into your life. Spend more time talking about people you admire and wish to emulate, events and how they impact your daily life, and ideas you want to adapt or adopt.
