Tool 2: Constructive Questions

Hi, I’m Ted Fleming, author of “Develop: 7 Practical Tools to Take Charge of Your Career“. This series covers the seven tools I share in my book.

The second tool is constructive questions. You need information in three key areas to find out whether you are a match for a particular opportunity: Experience, Knowledge and Skills, and Education.

Experience questions are things like “what are the top five experiences an ideal candidate needs for this role?”

Skills questions are things like “what are the top three skills and ideal candidate needs for this role?”

Education questions are things like ‘“what are the minimum education requirements for this role?”

Armed with that information, you now can compare the ideal candidate with your experience. I tell clients if you meet 60% or more of the requirements, it’s worth exploring that opportunity.
